... on my work pc

Problem started yesterday. Managed to reboot from recovery disk (EVENTUALLY) copied across as many files as I could then it crashed again

Have somehow managed to get into the recovery console and am running chkdsk /p /r which is now at 51% checking/recovering - slow auld process.

Anyone got any bright ideas if this doesn't work?

Oh dear.

If Windows is truly fucked, you may well be able to recover files by either sticking the hard drive into someone elses PC, or by booting from some sort of Linux live disc (knoppix or something like that - can send you a disc if you need one).

See what transpires after checkdisk has run though I suppose.

Yeah, just spoken to me bruv. He reckons that even if chkdsk works the hard disk is shot and it'll crash again soon. So he's coming over later to put a new one in and slave the old one across.

Still, if I can manage to get the files I was working on over at least I can work in the meantime.

Cheers re the offer of the Linux disk hiccup. There's some useful links (including the knoppix (sp?))and instructions on techrepublic. I'm using their '10 things you can do when Windows XP won't boot' article at the moment - but like bruv says, the hard drive is probably fekked.

It's very handy. I printed it off but you can download it if you register. The forum posts are great too - which is where I got the chkdsk suggestion from.

Could have been worse though. At least the work PC is backed up.

Yeah. I keep prevaricating about getting an external HD for back up. The first year I taught I made so many resouces it was ridiculous and the day before the summer holiday = dead computer, all gone. Bad times...

Won't fit and I don't have a DVD burner. But it gets backed up proper (the work), just such a pain.

Bruv's got me a 250GB new disk though, and I'm going to get one of those external hard drives as well.

I'll run spinrite on the other and see if I can mend em

Macs have hard drives too

It's not a case of if your hard drive will fail - it's a case of when. Back up what's important boyz an girlz
