overview
a podcast is generally just an mp3 file which you can subscribe to - so you don't have to keep checking back to a website to see if they've got anything new to download. (however, it’s not just mp3s, other files can be used: mp4, aac, .mov etc - some of which may have enhanced features, such as active web links, video and so on.)
how to ‘subscribe’
to subscribe to a podcast - so your pooter automatically downloads any new shows - you need a podcatcher - itunes will do the job fine, but there are many others out there, many of which are considered superior to itunes. check the ‘podcatcher’ link above for links to other podcatchers and places to download them.
often a 'subscribe' button at a podcast page will automatically subscribe you to the podcast; sometimes it will take you to a page of utter gobbledygook text (the 'xml' or 'rss feed'). in the latter instance, copy the url and paste into your podcatcher's 'subscribe' facility (eg in itunes it's 'advanced > subscribe to podcast'). my feed page is http://bristle.podOmatic.com/rss2.xml - if you go to that page it looks like nonsense, but if you paste the address into a podcatcher as i have explained above, it will automatically retrieve any new files posted to my podcast page.
however, note also that on sites like podomatic, everything is run through a user interface, so all you need to do - once you've set up a podcatcher - to subscribe to podcasts is press the buttons... you may also manually download individual podcasts as mp3s, without subscribing to the podcast, or simply listen to an individual podcast programme without even downloading it - usually through an embedded media player. on podomatic this is often a quicktime player.
listening to podcasts
to recap, with podcasts, there are often 3 ways to listen:
1: playing on the embedded player (ie not actually downloading the file).
on podomatic pages this is done by pressing the ‘play’ button to the bottom left of a programme post.
2: manually downloading an individual episode of a podcast to your computer, and playing it on a media player there (eg itunes).
on podomatic pages this is done by right-clicking and ‘save as’ (or equivalent) the ‘download’ link to the bottom right of a programme post.
note that doing this means you will have to return to the website to check if there are any more programmes uploaded that you wish to download.
3: subscribing to a podcast. this means all future episodes of the podcast will be automatically downloaded to your computer (generally to the library of your default media player, eg itunes), using your chosen podcatcher (see above).
on podomatic this is done by clicking one of the automated subscription buttons on the right-hand column (itunes, google, yahoo, newsgator), or clicking either of the rss buttons, and then cutting-and-pasting the url of the page that takes you to into your podcatcher.
podcasts which your computer has automatically downloaded can then be treated in the same way as any other media file in your media player - moved, deleted, deleted etc.
