70s movies!!!!

shamelessly ripping off flick's high concept thread franchise
bristle-krs

seen em all except for 'love story' (well not all of it, didn't really interest me), and 'billy jack', which i've never even heard of before, but it sounds kinda interesting:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Billy_Jack
flick

thanks i wanted to do this but was bored of cutting and pasting...

its a no brainer for me. star wars all the way.
Ninjadmin

never heard of billy jack or love story

shit i bet when the list for 00s comes out it will show that blockbuster films have been getting steadily worse for the last 40 years
bristle-krs

for me i think it's a toss-up between 'jaws' and 'blazing saddles', though i like 'exorcist' and 'godfather', i think they're just a bit too, well, po-faced. 'grease' is great, but definitely not my favourite

i ruined my memory of 'star wars' by seeing the special edition in 1997
flick

i didnt see any of them at the cinema, except star wars on rerelease (three times). i only own star wars (several different copies.. im not embarassed so there ) and jaws. oh and we have all the godfather movies but ive never sat down and watched them properly, just had them on while chatting and that. grease is one of those movies i dont own but should. i want to go to one of those grease singalong days.

ive not even seen, kramer vs kramer, blazing saddles, billy jack, or love story.
Ninjadmin

star wars for me

it's the best film ever
flick

the special edition isnt that bad. i reckon this forum is geeky enough to include at least one thread discussing the pros and cons of the various star wars movies and special editions. is there one already that i just didnt see?

i wanted to do a thread about star wars jokes

this forum is well geeky enough
flick

no, but seriously, blazing saddles over star wars? youre just trying to be kooky. and jaws, yeh its a fucking awesome movie, but star wars it is not.
bristle-krs

i just dont really enjoy star wars anywhere near as much

i don't do 'trying to be kooky' :P
ernestolynch

The Godfather for me.
flick

the ships - millenium falcon, star destroyer, death star, sandcrawler, even the landspeeder.

the characters - luke, han, leia, c3po, r2d2, vader, even the old dude and chewbacca

everything, EVERYTHING about star wars screams Best Film Of All Time.

if you dont vote for star wars its because youre trying too hard to be cool and youve forgotten what its like to just be in love.

so there.

it's purely top grossing films of each year, so blame all them people what didn't go see it in the cinema!!!
bristle-krs

i'd vote for it over star wars any day of the week, threats or no threats
bristle-krs

*goes back to working on 'tallulah' remix for soundclash*

flick

nope, star wars is still better, even than bugsy malone.

do a list of musicals.. but dont include animated. do a seperate list of animated movies. i could do this all day.
wraeth

It would have been a tough call if (a) I'd seen it at the pictures ; and (b) if it had been a choice.

As it is Star Wars gets it hands down
flick

derian knows whats up

ladies, you can tie me down, tickle me, threaten me all you like, torture me even, but you'll never convince me 'star wars' is a better movie than 'bugsy malone'
flick

no amount of torture can cure insanity and bad taste
wraeth

It's a close call krzzzzle but I'm sure flick and I can persuade you with some of the methods you mentioned
Ninjadmin

i don't like star wars either

Just got round to voting in this,

Grease is the greatest film of all time so I voted for that.

oh and I watched grease 2 the other week, and its better than I remember, though it doesnt come close to the original.
flick

i luvs ya herm, and grease is great, but better than star wars? sandra dee over princess leia? danny zuko over han solo?
bristle-krs

how come herman gets the soft soap and i got lead piping?!
flick

herman would fight back!
bristle-krs

herman

star wars is a good film that I could watch now and then. but I could watch grease over and over. Same with the godfather- I love that film too and it is a classic, but in sheer entertainment terms grease wins.

The 70s was a great decade for film, but I cant think of a single film I could watch as often as grease. Not even the wonderful rocky horror.
bristle-krs

'bugsy malone'

When thay film came out I wanted a quiff like danny but unfortunately had a fringe like sandy.

anyhow when grease came out grease merchandising was everywhere including that pickwick albumn pseudo soundtrack featuring people who sounded nothing like the people from grease. We were poor so we had that version (from woolies) instead of the superior but far more expensive official double album.

When star wars came out i was into that, and collected all the star wars weekly comics.

It wasnt one or other, when star wars came out we wanted to be jedi's (I used to ride around on my raleigh chipper, the junior versio of the chopper, prenetending I was about do blow up the death star). But when grease came out it was indeed the word, it was everywhere, if you were a kid in 78 you would have been packing away the light sabres and skipping about singing summer nights, thats how it was. Star wars was ones years fashion and grease was the next big thing.

Its only over years that the geek squad decided that star wars was cool and grease became a bit gay.

Remember in 78 there were no dvd's or vhs, so the only chance you got to see either film was in the pictures, so once seen you waited for the next big thing.

Star Wars run its course and the comic stopped (after milking the story far all its worth, complete with its own beyond star wars story that was nothing like empire strikes back and involved a donnie darko type talking rabbit) the following year grease clips were everywhere and all over top of the pops.

I remember a kid from school with Down syndrome who used to sit on the swings at the park in his leather jacket and occasionally produce a comb from his back pocket give his quiff a bit of a tidy and burst into verses of Sandy.

Never once did I recall him say he wanted to be jedi, but then again who would have when everyone had already seen star wars in a cinema long long ago...

To further illustrate the point, I had a copy of the star wars album (not the official one but one performed by one of orchestras, cos it was cheaper). The album was rubbish, who the hell would dance around to that, and the kids wanted to groove to the funky sounds, not be bummed out by orchestras.

noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

you ve spelt grease wrong
flick

i was born in 76, i had my grease tape recorded by my aunt for me from her album, and i do very much love grease. i prefered rizzo to sandy, and kenickie was way sexier than danny. plus kenickie is such a cool word.

but when i was growing up we played star wars, not grease. sure maybe in 1978 the kids went mad with that years craze, but star wars wasnt just big in 1976, it had longevity. kids still have pretend lightsabre fights and you can still buy star wars outfits in any good toy shop . plus star wars inspired a whole bunch of people to make movies of their own. what moviemaker was ever inspired by grease? and without star wars there would be no ILM neither.

i agree with dr carnage.
Ninjadmin

and star wars only has about 3 gay ass dance routines whereas grease is that for 90% of the time:D
