Attention Podcasters: Importantok i was gonna do this myself, but it would take fucking ages
we should put our shows on the CoolestRadio server as a first step
how do you do this?
1. Download an FTP program
http://www.smartftp.com/ is a good one for the pc
2. Get in contact with me and i'll make an account for you
3. Upload your stuff onto the server. You can also upload your tunes or pretty much whatever you like as long as you don't get us into trouble.
4. You can then link to it at www.coolestradio.com/radioshows/yourshow

i'll get the ones like sly and juxtaposeur who have only put one or 2 shows up, but it would be a lot easier if prolific peeps like breem and krzzle did their own since we got about 50 and that would take about 2 days solid uploading from my puter

S'cool
can we link it to iTunes stream?
|
Ninjadmin
|
i dunno
we do need a player, but it's quite hard to do
|
bristle-krs
|
like i said before, it would be useful to sort out the rss side of this FIRST, and upload things in sequence, otherwise it's just a random bunch of files
|
bristle-krs
|
nad how important is a player? i'm not sure i see the benefits of putting too much effort into that straight away
|
Ninjadmin
|
how can we sort rss out?
can someone else do it
if we get a player, we can just have a link on teh blog to play a random radio show
and if we have them online we can make a tcre page which is just a load of links to all the shows like on redZero radio or summat

basically i applaud your enthusiasm, but i do think some things need to be thought through first - and, becuse we are just all mongs on a mong board, doing this for fun not glory or cash money or $ony freebies, sometimes that means things will go a bit slower than you'd like...
but we've done a fuck load more than supposedly bigger/better/richer sites no pissing around deciding on who gets what fancy job title or whatever, no fucking about stressing over royalties nonsense and shizz...
double but for the next stage to work, well, it has to work. no use just throwing time and effort into it and hoping.
that means we need to know what we're trying to do (and why, often helps), then make sure we gots the knowhow to achieve it, then execute it.
so, with the radio, what i say is:
* it needs rss sorted.
* before we sort rss, we need to know what we're doing with it! are we providing a single, everything-we-broadcast subscription link? or links to individual shows also? or even subscription based on blog categories?
* we also need to make sure all the podcasters in the network are interested in this - because if they're not uploading their own shows to the blog, then its more work for someone else.
* stats & techy shit - we need a system in place that allows up to keep up to date with stats for the podcasts through the blog. we need to be able to keep track of our stats. this is IMPORTANT!
* 'house rules' - it's been difficult even on the podomatic page, where there's only two people with access to it, to maintain any sense of coherent, legible house style. i think we need to sort out some basic sense of house style - not just for the radio stuff, but the whole blog - to keep it neat, tidy, readable. what's acceptable on a bulletin board often looks fucking awful on a blog, and may well turn people off if they're not already familiar with tcte. by house rules i mean some basic standards - caps/no caps, tracklisting formats etc. personally i'd prefer it if everyone just followed my format syle seeing as it's fucking perfect but i know we can't always have our own way. but it would be good to have stuff looking halfway readable, preferably without loads of typos and bad links.
* if we are putting up all our shows, ever, then we need to work out how we can upload stuff logically, and in sequence.
* plus some other stuff, but hey, that's gotta be food for thought for 2am

I agree with Krs
The RSS is important. At the moment I get the podcast updated automatically into iTunes complete with tracklistings and other info.
Yesterday I got Hideousradio17 - but I had to download it (that was quite quick) onto desktop. Then I had to move it into the KidHideous folder on iTunes library. Then I had to import the file into iTunes. Then I had to tag it. And I still have to refer back to the blog/forum for the track listing. There's probably a quicker way of doing all that, but it still was like moving back to the pre-podcast days of TCRE.
I might carry on doing it for ninj's shows but if everyone was doing them like that it'd mean loads of work and I'd likely overlook some etc.
So I definitely think we need to get RSS sorted first.

What url should I have in Itunes to get the podcasts? - Cos all I have had from the coolest thing ever feed I've alwas had for about a month and a half is the soundclash. None of my shows, or J's or the new hideous radios.
Also, I keeps checking the blog, but that doesn't seem to get all the shows on it. I have missed a few things cos I don't always check the forum when I am busy. I used to just make time to listen through to the itunes feed...
Not having a go, just wondering like...

t'breem, you have to go to each podcasters podcast page (including your own) and subscribe to iTunes from there for each one. Then they all just automatically update into iTunes (or you can manually do it if there's a new show you want to get before the automatic update).

damn right
| Quote: | | * before we sort rss, we need to know what we're doing with it! are we providing a single, everything-we-broadcast subscription link? or links to individual shows also? or even subscription based on blog categories? |
I think a single link is best and if people listen to the shows they can pick up other links from there. Mind you, that presumes everybody does shows with spoken links, which they don't so that's perhaps a flawed arguement. I think there does have to be a single tcre link for everything as otherwise it's less of a station with an identity and just a platform for our own projects, which is fine but I like the idea of a proper station.

yeah, I agree. It's motivational innit...

I've got that FTP programme now - Ninj, you got to set me up an account or summat?

reet, i've set up breem and derian accounts
re: the rss feed, yeah, we should sort that out, i'll look into it. i think you can do it on wordpress but i'm not sure
what i would like as well, would be a link at the top of the forum where you click, and it's playing random podcasts, so we can all listen to the same thing at the same time, but maybe that's for another day
re: the stats i quite shamefully have forgotten how to login and keep forgetting to request a new password, which im doing now i'll have that locked
i just set up an account derian

breemy:
yeah, that's just me and ninja being slack, other stuff on etc. it's not a technical fault or anything, it's just i kinda gave up on uploading stuff to the podomatic page cuz we seemed to be on the verge of cracking the blog site - plus you and ninja were knocking out shows pretty much every day and it got to be a right pain uploading and deleting and amending and faffing etc
see, everytime a new show goes up, that means another show has to come down; and sometimes the size thing means two shows have to come down; so that means first deleting associated media, editing show notes, then uploading new show, etc.
so, um, yeah - me slack
i'll get on and upload the latest shows though.

bristle-krs

see, this is why i think its important to figure out what we wanna do first, before we end up spending loadsa time and effort bodging; the podomatic thing worked fine whilst we were ambling along, but as soon as we hit a head of steam and were banging out more than a show every week or so, and it becomes a lot more effort to keep on top of it.
house rules/style/whatever would mean everybody should have a fair idea of what needs to be done and how to do it, and it can all be shared out on a whoever-is-around basis.
in terms of rss: all we need to do is get a bit o'software or use an online app that generates an rss feed. basically then we can host the mp3 file, and stick up the rss feed associated with it, and then podcatchers/itunes can use the rss to check for updates & locate the relevent mp3s. it's nothing particularly magic, so long as we're generating the rss feed(s) in the way we want to.
stats: as well as being handy for just making ya feel good, they're also essential for keeping an eye on which files are most popular, for tracking links to us etc. atm traffic shouldn't really be a problem, but it never hurts to be forewarned! all it takes is a direct link to an mp3 on some fastmoving blog or board, and we could be fucked and not know why.

Now I need to know the server domain name or IP address

OK - transfer successful
You should really make a folder for each of us ninj, otherwise we'll all just be dropping em into the main ftp folder
Can you check to see if you can find them - it's a show, a playlist in Word and the artwork jpg
edit: dropped a few tracks across to you an all

If you go into 'help' you'll see a link. It takes you to here http://www.smartftp.com/
Just do the tutorials, there's only about three that you need (1) how to connect (2) how to download and (3) how to upload
They're very short, and really good
Not much point if ninj ain't done em though

Ah reet
I don't know which one you're using. But are you able to get the files across to ninj or is there a problem before then?
|
tangerinebreem

I thought I had uploaded them, but he can't see them.
I can log on to the server but I don't see any files on it (ninj showed me a screen shot of what I should see.) I appear to have put the files somewhere, cos I was logged onto to something, made a folder called 'tagerinebreem' and put two shows in it. If I log on again I can download those files but as I say I don't think ninj can see them.
I've tried multiple log-ins (i mean server addresses)....
When you do it, do you see loads of files in the remote window?

I should add, I'm using fetch and I've also tried filezilla with the same results each time.

If you look on the thread called 'i'm getting a cold' you'll see the rest of the conversation ninj and I had about it.
Basically, with smartftp you can see the ftp folders and files and access them. Mine are all sitting there. I've a feeling ninj isn't sure where they are, so I suggested he did a search of the whole server for one specific file name of mine.
I haven't heard anything since
