It's quite a different place to Beijing, it's all new and has quite a nice sense of landscaping for a chinese city. I really like it here, apart from the freezing cold...

The rural parts of china seem to be missing out on even minor developments such as roads and drainage, neglected whilst the cities become more and more modern. Is there any 'old parts of town' where traditional architecture can still be found?

In Dalian, not much. Especially this part of town which is a totally new development.
Wuhan had some more 'old China' looking areas in the backstreets. There the difference was even more pronounced in some ways - you'd get a pedestrianised street that wouldn't have looked out of place in any major western city, with tons of shops etc, and then 100 metres away, something that looked like proper developing world.
The main old architecture in Dalian is colonial, particularly Russian, in influence.

Yeah I really like it here, it's nice to be in a big city but have the beach/mountain/hill etc just nearby.
A lot of people go to Beijing, the Great Wall, the terracotta warriors, and then Hong Kong, and that's it, they've "Done China"...

Far FAR East is about the only place I ever wanted "to go to" but never did or will ...hey ho. 
Mind you this is from someone who spends his life watching things like The Host, Appleseed, Curse of the Golden Flower etc etc etc..

it's not that expensive to fly anywhere at the moment, and you could keep yourself in hotels, food booze etc in korea and probly china for a few weeks on 1000 pound easily

I didn't think much of Curse of the Golden Flower, but it was a bad copy.
