DustNo one new exactly what day it was or what month even. They thought it was around autumn as the air was damp and the air was always dank, heavy with moisture. They only knew it had been a long time since it hit and almost curiously it seemed even longer since they last ate.
With a heavy clunk the door swung open. Ali disturbed the dark with a torch which was beginning to turn jaundice. Dust gently floated in front of the lens playfully descending first left and then right but always downwards.
“I think someone has already been here,” she shouted before stepping inside the shop.
“How do you know?” Suzi said disapprovingly.
Suzie was a few years younger than Ali, her finger nails were black with blood, dirt and dust that what already in her lungs. Killing her slowly. Suzie still had the remnants of what she had with her when it happened. It was still in good nick albeit a bit dirty from sleeping on beds heavy with the poisonous dust. There was no escaping the dust it was in the rain, it was in unsealed food and it was on their clothes, hair and skin. They were unaware of the implications of the dust but aware of its presence. When it first happened no one was prepared. No sirens sounded, no shelters were erected. It just happened. A blinding white light of silence followed by a great plume of dust that has been slowly settling on the city ever since. Birds were one of the first things to vanish. Their bodies felt from trees, rooftops, scaffolding and places of roost. Their decaying bodies littered the city.
Ali was in her teens, neither pretty or ugly she was just Ali, however she did have a tremendous courage where others fail. It wasn’t a need to be strong or a want that kept her going, it was merely her nature.
Their parents were probably dead or dying. Like the rest of the cities up and down Britain, it was only the young that survived for some curious reason. The adults soon went insane and ended up fighting amongst themselves or retreating to die alone.
“Well I’m hungry!” Ali said to herself.
“You’re going to look in?”
”I have to do, none of us have eaten since… since sometime ago.”
”You won’t find anything.” Came a huffy reply.
Ali crept into the shop and shone the torch around. Sure enough everything had been looted, even the tills were empted for their money. Not even chewing gum remained, or even odd things like ant powder had been left. No doubt from people still hanging onto what was before. Not wanting to return to home and the rest of the children emptied handed she kept scanning the shop and went into the back of the store into the staff canteen. The dust, ever present, had left its grey residue on every surface.
“I don’t think anyone has been in here. There’s no footprints in the dust.” Again, speaking to herself as Suzi was always preoccupied with child like awe of exploring.
Together they searched the canteen. They opened every cupboard, fridge and door – nothing. Nothing of any use anyway, plenty of utensils and spoilt food covered in dust but nothing they could take away with them. Suzi picked away at the what appeared to be stale crumble. It hadn’t grown any mould or gone off – the dust sterilising any bacteria or mould that may of formed on it. As she stood eating she looked upwards, above eye level and on top of one of the cupboards she saw a large tin with it’s label facing the wall.
“LOOK! Look up there, above the sink.” She squealed.
“What, you found something? It better not be another dead spider.”
”No, its food, look, look up there.” She pointed excitedly.
Sure enough it was food. A large catering tin of baked beans 5kg of them.
“This will feed all of us” Smiled Ali before ruffling Suzi’s hair. “Well done!”
Suzi said nothing only grinned.
With out looking for other food they picked up a tin opener and some spoons to eat their bounty with and headed out of the store. They chattered amongst themselves about how long it was since either of them had beans on toast, and how sometimes their mum would put cheese on it too. Ali explained that she didn’t like cheese on her beans but she wouldn’t refuse it at the moment. They laughed together and for a few short moments they forgot about the world around them.
As they left the shop they froze. Motionless. Before of them stood a woman who was heavily pregnant, with deep sunken cheeks and dark eyes, pale milky skin. Her hair was in tatters and was starting to fall out, her lips were dry and cracked, she stood with her legs slightly apart and holding a chain.
“Can I have some of your food?” She asked with no hint of emotion.
Suzi looked at Ali, and shook her head. Ali looked at the chain and then up at the woman.
“You can have some of it. We have to share the rest with our friends back home, there is five of us. If we’re not back soon they’ll be looking for us.” Ali explained firmly.
The tin of beans hit the ground before Ali did. Ali’s eyes started to bleed before she hit the ground unsettling the dust as she collapsed, the tin rolled to the woman’s feet. She bent down, with eyes transfixed on Suzi and picked it up. Suzi began to scream. Not wanting to drop the chain or the beans the woman raised the tin of beans high before bringing it down with a sharp swift movement onto Ali’s head. Ali fell faster than Suzi, her delicate body folding up like paper. Then came the second blow. Then the third. The woman did not stop until she felt the skull give way. She then did the same on Ali’s body.
Holding the beans against her pregnant stomach she waddled off as fast as she could before the rest of the children came looking for their friends.
