in camera/rear projection vs bluescreen/c.g.i.watching the making of featurettes for 'aliens' and am reminded how awesome james cameron was in choreographing visually believable fx together, with not a single piece of computer generated business.
mixing different types of models, puppets, cables, rods, hydraulics, pneumatics, pyrotechnics, suits, lighting, shadows, camera speeds, reverse-cranked cameras, flipped cameras, matte art... it's all in there, and beautifully stitched together.
i'm not sure it would be fair to compare 'aliens' with 'alien 3', as c.g.i. was in its infancy then, so the small number of shots do rather stick out, but certainly compared with 'alien: resurrection' i think 'aliens' wins on the way it integrates the visual elements into the storytelling, blending into the story rather...
but what movie fx do you rate? digital and model; rear projection & bluescreen; matte, compositing, models, puppets... anything you like
obviously we're going to have ray harryhausen in the mix somewhere, can't beat a good bit of skeletal swordplay from 'jason & the argonauts'
