Is there anyway to make flash photos less flat and nasty????besides shelling out money for a flash that bounces the light off the roof?
Is there anything you can do by fiddling with the f-stop, shutterspeed or film speed, any fancy tricks?

I don't do much flash photography. Depends what camera you have really. If you can do slow flash, it might help a little - essentially fill flash to freeze motion or the foreground but the rest of the shot is still as normal.
Also I suppose you could experiment with a (DIY?) diffuser - Tupperware or something in front of the flash.

masking tape or that magic tape that is translucent
softens the flash a little and preserves the skin tones better

do you put masking tape over the flash? (sorry if this is a dim question). Ta for the tips - I have a cannon g5, but find it frustrating at low light levels. Will have a look at the manual and see if it does slow syncro or owt like that.
(that link doesn't seem to work)

Yup, directly over the flash. I have no idea about the Canon G5, sorry. I have a strict aversion to Canon
