From the man himself:
Cobden Arms Camden tonight. First time I've had to leave any pub in over 20 yrs!
Would anyone who was present with me and several other (in themselves and blameless) Urbanites who were also present, care to explain exactly why I was chucked out of the Cobden Arms in Camden High Street tonight, well before closing time?
And not (principally or initially) by the staff either?
An ex-Urbanite, now "elsewhere", was one of those present -- someone who I was perfectly happy to start/have a chat with. A chat which I naively imagined was harmless banter. He lost his rag with me tonight with exceptional suddenness and in a thoroughly paranoid, utterly psycho, implicitly violent, and deeply incomprehensible manner tonight.
Verbally violent and strongly menacing shit, honestly
I haven't been caused to be chucked out of a pub (or had to leave it) in more than 20 years before tonight.
I can't even express how much I fail to understand, other than that I seem??? to have misread where that person was coming from. One moment, a chat about London postcodes, and one or two other vaguely harmless/semi political things. Then, next, very soon after, a near-psychotic, menacing, and more than anything else a frightening attack -- verbal only, so far as it went, but it was a good job for my own safety that I left.
Seriously.
Especially when the guy's LibCom sidekick 'intervened' (not that this is LibCom's fault in general -- I have nothing against them. Just really hope it wasn't the thororoughly sound kropotkin, I'm sure it wasn't. Never met this mainly silent sidekick before in my life. Nor the principal offender, either, it seems!).
I had to leave. The barman only got involved because 'voices were raised' -- admittedly very much including mine .. but mine was out of real fear and pure bewilderment. By the time the barman got inbvolved, I was very anxious to leave anyway!!
I tried to negotiate with the backup LibCom guy outside the pub, the guy who followed me out to pressurise me, with quiet voiced silent menace into not coming back in ... . Not nice ...
But, other Urbanites, if you choose for your own social pleasure to hang out with total psychos, then yes, you can please yerselves ... and genuinely ... but I hope you're asking yourslves a few SERIOUS questions about your 'friends'. I believe that you must be, because you're decent people with integrity.
The 2 blokes you stayed in the pub with after I'd gone, aren't.
Threats of violence, and implicit violence, are totally unacceptable in any supposedly civilised company.
Explanatory PMs welcomed.
(By the way tonight I had 4 pints altogether, all after a substantial meal. The last one not finished when the 'row' broke out -- as I said, very suddenly.. 3 of the pints were only GK IPA (in the Cobden), and earlier, 1 of Youngs Ordinary in the Spreadeagle. Real Ale drinkers on feeble session bitters never start fights. Fact.).
