so i went on friday and im gonna go again later this week, taking the kids this time. the three different bad guys dont distract from each other too much because you already know harry, so its only sandman and venom that need introducing. you do feel sorry for the sandman dude because he mainly just seems confused and a bit traumatised. the scene where he gets his powers is excellent. theres no explanation as to where the symbiote comes from except 'from space', and it conveniently finds peter parker within minutes. then it hangs around in his room for days doing nothing, for no apparent reason. having a sleep maybe? but once its attached the black suit looks excellent. parker doesnt go so much evil as cocky, proper arrogant and sleazy, but its funny to watch him dancing down the street like an idiot. his hair looks terrible though :?
he does do some dark stuff, like he totally goes for harry, beating the shit out of him then walking away after chucking one of the exploding pumpkin bombs in his face. he also goes for mary jane, chucking her down on the floor. the scene where parker rips the symbiote off him is excellent. eddie brock is a cocky and annoying character till he becomes venom. gwen stacey is just some a blond girl hanging around being dippy. mary jane is going from harry to pete and back as usual. harry is quite cool in 3, having been dull and whiny as fuck through the other two, he finally becomes likeable in this one. and j jonah jameson gets more comedy scenes which the kids in the cinema all seemed to love.
it was good enough to get a clap at the end which is always a good sign, but it wasnt like standing applause or nowt. there was a lot of happy laughter at the jokes and the dancing, and a lot of very loud gasping at the fight and chase scenes. its definitely a cinema movie, which doesnt mean its got no story and its all about the cgi, but it does look spectacular and it would be a shame to only experience that on the small screen.
anyway i only wanted to write something quick to say i loved it. i loved it
anyone see 28 weeks later yet?

Ninjadmin
just seen it, i thought it was fucking class
sandman and venom were fucking ace, the battles were class, bit of a shit way for venom to die, but there was no way spiderman could have really beaten him, loved the jokes as well, specially when he's out on the streets sleazing on all the models
best of the three
flick
he's not really dead, is the way im looking at it. usually to get venom down what they do is use soundwaves to split them, then capture them seperately.
anyway its a comics based movie which means there is ALWAYS a way to bring characters back from the supposed dead
what did you think of harry? i thought this was his best movie.
Ninjadmin
his best friend? definetely the best for him, he wasn't really a major character in the other two tho, he was still a bit of a pussy, but i thought he was really good in this one
Spoiler:
it's a shame he got killed at the end cos he was turning into an interesting character, and i'm pretty sure he's dead dead
i also thought it was funny that kirsten dunst kept getting fired cos she really is shit at singing
flick
yeh i agree with you.
its hard to like mary jane isnt it? gwen was a total dippy blonde stereotype as well. it was a great movie but sam raimi doesnt really get women.
are there any superhero movies that have been directed by women?
theres some video podcasts on there with women directors and one of them is with joey lauren adams.
Ninjadmin
to be fair to sam raimi the original comics are the same
underworld was a good female superhero film, dunno who directed it tho
flick
underworld was awful! youre right about the comics though. the worst one was whatsherface out of the fantastic four, what a drip. the xmen women are usually pretty good though.
american psycho was directed by a woman! im well surprised by that.
so was the appalling bewitched. i spose that could sort of count as a superhero movie, i mean shes got super powers hasnt she. thats the only thing i noticed on that list.
Ninjadmin
i loved underworld me, aristocratic vampire babes vs junkie werewolves, what's not to like :?
the woman who directed american psycho is this proper mumsy british woman as well
all the original superhero comics are aimed at geeky teenage boys, hence peter parker and clark kent being such doylums
i was quite impressed with the way he made peter parker so likeable in the films, specially in that one. toby macguire got the geek perfectly

iirc mary harron was a fairly late replacement director, and she spent a fair bit of effort tweaking the original script to something a bit, well, less sterile. i think she might have been brought in on the strength of her s.c.u.m. film, to try and counterbalance the novel's straight-faced hypermasculinity or what have you.
flick
peter parker is likeable in the comics, i always really liked him. course im a geek but whatever. as for clark - personally ive always been marvel over dc. and supes is just the lamest character. but lois is kinda cool.
i still think the xmen comics are pretty good for women characters. eta - thats one of the most disappointing things about the movies, theyr eally fucked up rogue and storm for a start. gambit being missing was another fuckup imo.
Ninjadmin
they are both likeable, kind of honourable hardworking kids, but superheroes who keep it a secret piss me off cos they always suffer so much, like in the movies he must have been going out with her for years but they never seem to get jiggy
the women in xmen rocked, i'd definetely go out with mystique

i bet youd ask her to impersonate you during sex.

ive been reading round the spidey reviews before i write my own, but theres stuff that is really bugging me and im beginning to wonder if im imagining things cos noone else is mentioning them.
like, for example, the symbiote. to me the whole symbiote/black suit thing is a blatant metaphor for drug use and ultimate addiction. does anyone else see that or is it completely in my imagination? it just seems so obvious but its lack of mention is making me doubt my own reading of it. but im a fucking huge venom fan and have been for years so ive had plenty of time to think about it.. is refused reading this? would appreciate input!
flick
i mean look at the way parker responds to the suit. first time he wears it it totally increases all his powers, gives him this gigantic rush. he has to hide it away in a suitcase to resist it. as things in his life get worse, as he gets more desperate, he takes it out from hiding and turns to wearing the symbiote for extra strength. he starts wearing it all the time, under his everyday clothes. it allows him to do things he wouldnt usually do, like kill his enemies. his professor tries to warn him of its dangers but he deliberately ignores him. his aunt warns him of his behaviour but he ignores her too. he doesnt tell anyone about the suit, keeps it totally secret. he gets edgier and edgier, the buzz he got initially is wearing off and he's deliberately out looking for trouble. remembering (if youre into comics...) that the symbiote itself feeds off emotions, so it needs to push peter into increasingly intense situations to get the emotional responses it wants, then presumably it rewards him with a buzz, the feeling of extra power, and it stops him from caring so much what other people think, or feel. he gets proper cocky, and he's so confident he dances right down a busy street, oblivious to the fact that anyone might be watching him. he does humiliate eddie brock, but the really major thing isnt so much that he does that, but that he clearly enjoys it. he humiliates gwen, uses her to get at mary jane, then he humiliates mary jane and attacks her too. he also humiliates harry, says cruel things to him that he never would usually say, then he explodes his best mate and walks away smiling. his conscience seems to have taken a holiday and his behaviour is totally unpredictable and extreme. also, when hes wearing the suit under his clothes, he keeps reaching for it, touching his chest, checking its there, stroking it. this is all really blatant fall into drug addiction stuff, isnt it?
flick
more searching turns up a review by another woman that sees what i see
thank fuck for that. im not insane and i dont have to throw away my venom comics.
flick
sorry for multiple posts.. now i kind of get why people are whining about the dancing scenes. like if you dont see the drug metaphor then of course those bits are just gonna look totally daft. i mean who dances down the street to their own music? um... i know i fucking have. and that whole jazz club scene.. i mean hes just acting like any fucking arrogant full of it i own this fucking place coked up nutter, except hes not just anyone, he's spiderman and can do more mental stuff so of course his behaviour is gonna be even more exaggerated.
it is possible that people who didnt read the comics didnt get the effect the suit had on him. although there is a whole scene devoted to him swinging about going "i feel good!!!!" . or maybe its that they havent done drugs or been around people who do drugs. but its so blatant!! he looks wired!!!
Ninjadmin
i thought the symbiote was just the dark side
it was cool cos peter parker is a character who doesn't have a dark side, he's a perfect person, it was fucking annoying how he always had lots of girls in love with him but he was too sweet to do anything about it till he got the stbiote
i spose you could say it was a metaphor for drugs, but it's more just a metaphor for selfishness
flick
peter parker isnt perfect, hes just a normal guy. hes a total geek in school, gets bullied for years by the popular kids. his parents are both dead and hes raised by his quite elderly aunt and uncle in a little house. when he moves out he mostly lives in bedsits and he does a bunch of crummy jobs just like everyone else does before he goes freelance at the bugle. he's not really good (superman style) or really bad. his only real talent (spider skills aside) is that he's smart and really good at science. the whole point of the peter parker character is that he's just an average guy, maybe a bit geekier than most. girls dont fall for him either, not until theyve been friends for years and years. mostly his women friends go out with assholes. for ages peter parker is like the guy doomed to watch the girls he fancies go out with dicks while they tell him he's their 'best friend'.
Ninjadmin
oh yeah i agree with that, which is why i was a bit pissed off that they put it in the movies that he got together with MJ and she knew that he was spiderman, one of the main parts of his character is that he is this really cool superhero, but he has such a shit time at work and never gets the girl
but as an observer we can see that he is a real hero, he works his arse off trying to be a scientist and a photographer and then goes and works his arse off as spiderman in his free time and never claims any credit for it
flick
yeh. i like peter parker loads. like if you think about most of the other marvel/dc style superheroes, he's the one i find easiest to understand or relate to. spidey is one of the most popular characters ever so clearly im not the only person who is feeling that.
people complain theres no depth to spidey stories but there is. like they complain stuff isnt realistic but it is. i saw someone complain that theres too many coincidences, but when you think about it, life is like that, stuff just happens. some people want cinema to be so 'real' that it just isnt anymore.
Ninjadmin
some of the bits in spidey 3 did have me laughing how unlikely they were tho
like an escaped convict happened to run into a particle machine which happened to turn him into sandman
and the evil alien force that created venom as well, so that was just an evil alien force that arrived on meteor :?
flick
yeh but that stuff is proper comic book. i mean if those coincidences didnt happen then there wouldnt be any superheroes and villains, would there. there would be nothing to talk about. spiderman would be like this:
peter parker goes to visit some spider exhibit. nothing happens. he keeps getting picked on in school. the end.
what did you think of that whole sandman bit? it was so sad! looked amazing too. i did wonder why the locket didnt get broken down too but my partner reckons its cos its made of metal. theres some site that deals with the science in movies, im gonna look for the link.
flick
i think im looking for a different one but this is a good start:
i went to an exhibition last year which was star wars and science trying to explain how the fuck a lightsabre or the death star beam could work
i thought sandman did ok by the end of it, he still got to live and keep his powers and he probably won't rob anyone again
flick
course he will keep robbing. i think he will try not to hurt anyone though. you can imagine him flying off to find solitude by the sea somewhere and come to terms with himself. he'd make a good hero. whats he like in the comics? i never read a sandman story.
