Get a big board. The bigger the board, the easier it is to stand up on the damn thing. You want a long board/Malibu rather than a short board/thruster.
Like the ones on the far left:
Or if you've never surfed at all, those huge yellow foam ones the surf schools use are a good introduction, and just about the easiest thing to stand on.
That said, if you want a board, i think my knackered old 6'6" Phil Clifford shaped thruster is still at my mate's house near St. Austell.
