Tom was six, and like many six year olds he slept with a night light, due to an irrational infantile fear of the dark. Tom however did like to have the curtains open so he could see the branches of the tree outside his window, with its resident owl that he had named Bigeyes. He frequently imagined the adventures that Bigeyes would have every night with the family dog Geoff. The adventures of the two animals weren’t that implausible given that Bigeyes was a particularly large tawny owl, and that Geoff was an especially small yorkie, so it wasn’t impossible to imagine Bigeyes carrying Geoff off to far away lands, although Timbuktu was probably stretching it a little...
