the book

this is a story i wrote a few years ago, retyped from memory

he walked everywhere, never stopped, he didn't understand the people who stayed in their towns and villages. there was always another hill, and at the top of the hill a beautiful view. hundreds of places he hadn't seen, rivers, forests, houses. so he just kept walking. whenever he was hungry he could find fruit on trees or beg or steal in a town for scraps. and whenever he was tired he could lie down under a tree and sleep
sometimes at night, when he was lying on the grass, and there were so many sounds all around him, he would like someone to be there with him. or when he saw something beautiful, he wished he could show it to someone. but most of the time he was happy, and too busy finding new things, or looking for something to do and he didn't think about it
the only thing he had except for his clothes and his blanket was a book. he couldn't read the words. but he had found the book by a stream one day, and it was such a beautiful thing with it's leather cover and the pretty writing that he had saved it from the rain

one day he came to a cottage with a girl in, she stopped him and asked him where he was from, he didn't know. and where he was going, which he didn't know either. they began talking and she was amazed that he could live with no destination, and nowhere to go or come back to. he could not understand how she could stay in one place for so long when there were so many things to see

they talked for a while, and when it got dark, she asked if he would like to stay in here house that night and share her food, he agreed. he had never stayed in a house, and he was very hungry he realised

after they had eaten he showed her the book, and she asked if he would like her to read from it. he was overjoyed, the book was so beautiful and he had always imagined what it meant

the book was full of poems, and the boy was amazed. some of them made him feel how he felt on those nights, when the only things in the world were him and the animals singing to each other. and some made him feel how he did when he was full of food, and had the sun on his face with nothing in front or behind him

he stayed at her house for a few weeks, she would go out to work, and he would mend things in her house, and clean up and make food for her. every night she would read poems from the book for him and he would tell her about all of the places he had seen, and all of the amazing things there were

he asked her to come with him, and leave the house behind, so that they could travel around together. but she loved her house very much, and did not want to change her life after all this time. he felt the same, and although she pleaded with him to stay, he was sorry but he couldn't. he was thinking about all of the things he still hadn't seen, and didn't want to spend the rest of his life in one place. so that night, after she went to bed. he packed his clothes and blanket and left the house

after a few days he was sitting by a river, looking at the fish. but the sky did not seem so blue, and the water did not seem so fresh. he thought of the book of poems, and the girl, and it did not seem so exciting to see the fish jumping in the river, or hearing the wind singing through the trees. so he jumped up and headed back to her house. because he had never gone back the way he came before, it took him a few days to find her house again, he got back in the afternoon and waited for her to come home. that night she didn't come back, or the night after. he waited for days before he realised that she had gone forever, looking for him

and the only thing she had left was the book of poems

Serious question: fairy tales and fantasies, what's the difference?
Ninjadmin

fairy tales are based on learning a lesson. they are grounded in truth fantasies are just fantasies so they don't have any rules
Soreenkid

Smart arse.

Fairy tales are more than true - not because they tell us dragons exist, but because they tell us dragons can be beaten.
Ninjadmin

am not being a smart arse or anything. that's one of my ambitions to have a book of fairy tales published

terry jones did a wicked one, but i could do better
