Whats the Shizzle with Ashton Court Festival Bristle?

I'm not going (no mone , no time ) but let us know the gen innit. Cheers blud.
J77

Ashton Court festival was a security lock-down last year

Used to be good -- for the kids -- now it's another cog of the corporate festival machine
wraeth

I've only been once - last year - so I've got nothing to compare it to. I had a good time mainly cos it turned out a TCTE gather
Isambard

I was there last year and got frisked for dugs at the entrance.
Lucky I'm a clean living boy.

The whole security thing was a real pisser last year and part of the reason I wouldn't go this year.

But the festival is teh broked on the money front I think and I wanted to hear off the Bristly one who has his ear trumpet to the ground on such shizzle.
J

i went in 2005 and it was pretty cool, cept all that orange shit. ( they did give me a wind-up phone charger though)
but was good times,
oh and that VIP tent stuff i heard they did
districtline

a commercial festival
J77

Used to be for the families -- did they lose money cos they had to get in extra security or summit, I remeber the dance area started to get a bit hardcore in the late 90s -- plus the post event raves in the woods/quarry.

I never really saw the need for a sponser tho'

Used to be a community festival, not an orange one
hiccup

The future's not bright...
wraeth

Isambard

Innit though. The drink and entertainment licence comes with a LOT of strings for security and insurance and shizzle.

That weekend I will be at a traditional event in a local park that happens once a year.

Back in the olden days, servants never got a chance to party.
So on one Sunday a year they'd go to the park at 6AM to drink and dance.

And the party still goes on, the pub with a huge beer garden and space for dancing opens at 6AM and there's a band and posh dancin' and shizzle.

You have to be there by 5 at the lastest to get a seat so you have to go to bed early the night before.....or head straight there from a club!

The tickets for the 33rd Ashton Court Festival taking place on the 14th and 15th July 2007 are now on sale across Bristol.

Ashton Court Festival 2007 is going to be a bigger and better event, and with the possibility of the tickets selling out, we are encouraging Bristol to snap up tickets NOW.

Responding to feedback from previous years, we want to create more space within the festival and prevent any overcrowding - which will give our audience a much more pleasant experience of the weekend with plenty of room to relax and take in the beautiful surroundings.

Any tickets bought on the day will be subject availability. Ashton Court has always been family orientated event and we want to do everything possible to ensure that families don't get literally crowded out of the fun.

We will be offering considerable discounts for those who buy their tickets in advance.

Full details about the tickets on offer for 2007 is available here.

cheeky fucks!!! pretending that getting people to buy tickets waaay in advance to stir up a bit of cashflow is somehow not actually to do with money but with making it 'family-friendly'... not sure the huge price-hikes for a local, community, not-that-long-ago free festival contribute much to its family friendliness

£20-30? i think i'll give it a miss.

two adults with 2 kids over 10, if they didn't buy their tix well in advance, could easily be weighing out at £80+ just to get into a public park to see some local bands and enjoy the sunshine over the weekend - and that's without even taking whatever exorbitant bus fares are going to be levied into account...

thats insane
flick

up until a couple of years ago id gone every year since i was a small kid. a good number of them i went to the balloon festival too hehe.

way back when everyone used to actually call it the bristol community festival, too. and we was proud because it was free and brilliant and people used to come from all over for it. first time i ever slept up there i was 14, we kipped for a few hours on some staging cos we were too knackered to walk home to patchway. there wasnt really even much security about then, it was all pretty open and friendly.

my favoritest ever ashton court show was the moonflowers when i was probably about 16? a stage full of naked bouncing people, it was great. anyone else remember that?

memory lane...

was that the year the Moonflowers had a great big banner saying "take drugs and fuck", and the police told them to take it down, so they changed it to say "take rugs and duck" ?

I was there.

Not quite on the same scale, but this is the first year there'll be a charge to get into Ealing Jazz Festival, and some other bits of what is now the Ealing Summer Festivals. It's only a pound, but that's not the point, it's always been a free festival. You could just wander down to the park with some beers and come and go as you pleased. Now it's in a fenced-in compound. Totally different vibe. My Dad was on the original organising committee, and I've been every year since it started, but don't think I'll bother going this year.

When they first fenced it in a few years ago, they said they wouldn't start charging. Lying gits. And the Tory councillor who has instigated the charge says it's necessary to pay for the fences! I say get rid of the fences. Fuckers.

And you can bet it won't just be a pound next year. And I'd be surprised if you can still take your own drinks in. And the place is crawling with security and coppers now so crafty spliffs are tricky. Aaaand it used to be a showcase for local musicians, now the locals only get a few sets. And they've shortened it from seven to five days, and done away with lots of the daytime music. Really pisses me off that the council have wrecked what was one of the best things about where I live. Oh, and it was £3.50 a pint in the beer tent last year

Still, at least The Mela is still free. Anyone up for another tcte gather there like we did last year?

nah i think the nekkid year was 93 cos im fairly certain i was 16. i think the year you're thinking of was a couple of years before that when i was 13 or 14. i could be wrong though!

Tickets will be 50 quid before long
Isambard

I seen over t'road that Avon and Somerset's finest are objecting to the licence which is up for approval by North Somerset Council on 28th June.

One day we should get tents or book a cottage or shizzle and go out into the cundree for our own festival innit.

A nice countryside or beach walk for floaty moments.
Extreme fluffiness, eye hugs and chillage
Shared food and drink, KRS offering three kinds of sausage; beers to absinthe to lovely juices like blackcurrant.
Music from ambient chill to pumping techno to funky shizzle depending on the mood of the crowd. Wierd little musical instruments welcome
Kites and pois and the collapsible ball thing where you have to go on one knee.

Now they've banned punters bringing their own cans & (plastic) bottles!

People going to this year's Ashton Court Festival will be banned from bringing their own alcohol onto the site (Evening Post)

Quote:
Organisers say they want the public to stop bringing alcohol to the two-day event to keep the atmosphere over the weekend "fun, friendly and family orientated".

Everyone who goes to the festival will be searched on entry and those found with alcohol or drugs will be "dealt with appropriately", say organisers.

The news follows last week's announcement that ticket prices to the festival, which a decade ago was a free event, have risen by more than 40 per cent.

Festival organiser Steve Hunt said: "Without any doubt, we do not want people to bring alcohol onto the site.

"This decision has been taken due to feedback we have had from previous years from both the public and artists performing during the weekend.

"There will be, on site, several bars and spaces where people can purchase alcohol safely and responsibly.

"This is a matter we take very seriously."

What a crock of mealy-mouthed shit, Steve It's a rinse-out!

Although this particular write-up of the news is somewhat let down by the author Paul McLennan's suspicious selection of interviewees...

Quote:
April Boulton, a 28-year-old marketing manager from Long Ashton...

Chris Russell, a 27-year-old IT technician from Bedminster...

Rachel Devitt, an account manager from Windmill Hill...

could that April Boulton be, perchance, related to the April Boulton working at Clik Software, based in the Tobacco Factory? could that Rachel Devitt be related to the Rachel Devitt who works at InvitationBook, which is, erm, based at the Tobacco Factory? InvitationBook, that meejah company set up by Dougal Templeton (Venue), Sam Oliphant (Trade-It) and others?

Perhaps Paul just happened to be wandering through the Tobacco Factory at the time when called upon by his editor to gather some what-the-people-say vox pops; slightly unusual given the chained-to-the-phone nature of news journalism at the Evening Post's Temple Way HQ, but there you go... Or perhaps the connection is with his earlier piece for the Post on e-petitions; several of the interviewees are identifiable from e-petitions in Bristol. Who knows!

But anyway, if the best cross-section of Bristol society you can gather is a marketing manager, an IT technician and an account manager, then I think I might go and do myself in

Now Bath Ales are lovely and I had a coupe of pints last year.
But it was £2.50 a pint and a 30 minute round trip walk from where we were to get a pint and we weren't too far away.

I like a quaff it has to be said but over the whole day that's an extra what £10-20 a person if you can't bring your own cans in.

lineup out...

Playing alongside the local talent will be some of the UK's biggest musical artists.

On Saturday, the headliners will be -

The Fall (Main Stage) - Since their formation in the late 1970's, The Fall, led by Mark E. Smith, have been through 58 line-up changes, while recording 26 studio albums and 24 sessions for the John Peel show. The current band is quite possibly the best yet, and their latest record, "Reformation Post TLC" received rave reviews everywhere.

Gravenhurst - The ever-changing sound of Gravenhurst is currently inspiring musicians and fans across the country with beautiful guitars and soulful vocals.

Mad Professor (Bigger Top) - The Legendary Mad Professor is probably the UK's most accomplished reggae and dub producer alongside Dennis Bovell. Accompanied by the Ariwa Posse, he closes Saturday on the Bigger Top stage with live music and fierce dub control.

Quantic DJ Set- Quantic aka Will Holland - is one of the UK's finest Djs and funk producers. Currently based in Colombia, he's dropping in for a DJ set from unreleased QSO nuggets to classic Latin get downs.

The high quality entertainment continues on Sunday with -

The Good, the Bad and the Queen (Main Stage) - Damon Albarn. Tony Allen. Paul Simonon. Simon Tong. Mix four incredibly creative and influential musicians and you get TGTB&TQ. For those that missed their hugely over-subscribed debut gig last winter, another chance to see them. Dub inflections, skittering Afrobeat drums and a dark, mysterious edge.

Enter Shikari (Amphitheatre) - Formed in St. Albans in 2003, post-hardcore Enter Shikari are the country's top unsigned band, selling out huge venues - and recently achieving a top 5 album - without the ‘benefit' of a major record company.

Horace Andy and Dub Asante Band (Bigger Top) - Horace Andy's distinctive falsetto singing style has been a favourite of reggae cognoscenti since his days recording for Coxsone Dodd at the Studio label in the late 60's - and more recently, of course, with Massive Attack!

in summary:

* today's north somerset council licensing committee meeting has been inconclusive, and will reconvene on monday.

* the avin it constantly somewhere filthery is demanding the right to search everyone entering the site for booze & drucqs.

* bristol city council doubts the organisers has the spondoolinks to pay for any damage.

* the bower ashton residents association & the polis want the festival to end by 9pm

* bristol city council also wants traffic management plan submitted 2 months before the festival, which, um, takes place in a little over two weeks...

so, all looking rosy then

Conditional go-ahead for festival
Bristol's Ashton Court Festival has been given a licence for the event subject to more than 30 conditions relating to the running of the site.

Organisers have been told they need to put up a perimeter fence at least 11 ft high (3.6m) around the event.

Councillors have also insisted on a police-approved traffic management plan and curbs on opening hours and noise.

Last Thursday councillors deferred a decision for the event's licence until 2 July.

The event takes place on 14 and 15 July.
