attention mi podomatic kru!!11!

eagle-eyed casters will have noticed that we've been given a month's-worth of free pro account-level tools at http://www.podomatic.com/podcast/newstats - detailed locations of subsribers, top referrers etc

well, that only has a couple more weeks to run, but even better is that on the regular stats page (found
at http://www.podomatic.com/podcast/stats ) you can now download .csv spreadsheets with full data (including on individual episodes!) for both the past month & year

Missed that Krs! I'll have a look when I'm a bit less holiday seasoned (or pickled some might say).

Anyways - I bought a mic yesterday :-o A logitech desktop one that you can do skype on too. Apparently it's noise cancelling

So I've just got to get this audacity thing sorted now

no time to get the jeepers creepers, missus

just treat it like a word document - open a document, write a bit, save it, write a bit more, save it, write a bit more, save it, decide to move things around, go back, cut & paste, save it...

except instead of doing it with text, do it with audio.

===

one way to get started - and you'll only figure out how it all works by doing it, like riding a bike or swimming - is to:

1 - choose what tunes you want to play, create and itunes playlist for them
2 - then import each of them into an audacity document you have created

you can do this by either...

-highlighting the track in itunes
-then 'file > show in explorer' (???? i guess - on a mac it's 'show in finder', or apple-r)
-this takes you to the actual mp3, wherever it's located
-now highlight the actual mp3 and (again, i'm guessing how it works on a pc) right-click and 'open with... audacity'
-this opens up the mp3 in a new audacity window
-select all and copy
-switch to your radio show window & paste in
-repeat with next tune, having first created a new track to stick it in (project > new stereo track)

or by...

-in your radio show audacity document importing the mp3 through the 'project > import audio' path (or 'control-i')
-and so on with each new mp3 (this way audacity automatically creates a new track - it's the easier of the two methods)

and don't forget to regularly save!

3 - once you have imported all the tracks, you can record the talky bits. if you like you can write yourself a script so you don't freeze up!

let's assume you want to talk at the beginning of the show, and then between each of the songs, and at the end. right.

first things first: click the 'mute' button to the left of each of the tracks.

oh yes - and make sure your microphone is plugged in, and that you have told audacity to record from the microphone (check in the preferences in 'file>preferences' or control-p, then audio i/o: recording/device/microphone)

now create another new track (project > create new stereo track', remember), and making sure the cursor is at the very beginning, click the red dot 'record' button, and say whatever you want to say to start the show. when you're done talking, click the 'stop' button.

move the cursor back to the beginning, press 'play' and check how it sounds.

assuming that's all okay...

4 - now you want to move the first track into position. click the double-headed arrow button (the timeshift tool), select the first track, and drag it to the right, so its start buts up against the end of the opening bit of chat. click the 'mute' button on that track so it un-greys, and select the selection tool, move the cursor to jest before the two tracks you are working with meet, press play, and check that it sounds okay. if it's okay, save! if it's not in the right place yet, tinker with it using the timeshift tool, then when you are happy, save!

5 - now repeat with each track, one by one...

===

ALTERNATIVELY...

instead of importing all the tracks in one go, do it track by track.

whichever way you choose, before you know it, it'll all be done

===
now i know the above *seems* like a lot to take in, but that's because it's the hand-holding version.

the really snappy version, which should make you cry in ecstatic excitement at the thought of how empowered you now feel ( ) goes more like this:

the really simple, quick version:

1 - choose tunes
2 - write script
3 - create new audacity document
4 - check microphone is your recording input (control-p ‘audio i/o > recording > microphone’)
5 - press record
6 - read out introduction
7 - press stop
8 - import song (control-i)
9 - switch from selection tool to timeshift tool and move song 1 into place after the intro
10 - save!!!
11 - create new stereo track (project > create new stereo track) and record next link
12 - repeat steps 7-11 until end

sorted!

dj not-i has started his own podcast, and he's done himself a jingle, which uses stuff from & mentions tcte!!!

not had a chance to the whole show yet (am knackered and am definitely going to bed, right now), but if it's anything near as high quality as his jingle it'll be great

can we have a moratorium on coolestradio.podomatic.com?

it's important to manage it properly, and that means making sure everybody gets a fair shot at getting there shows on it.

*every time a tcre caster puts up a new show, they should delete the file of their previous one (not by deleting the blog entry, but instead by deleting the mp3 file located in the 'my media' section of the 'manage podcasts' page) - and *also* editing the associated blog entry with an explanation that the show has been deleted, and of where else someone can download it from eg that caster's own podomatic page

*please give your mp3s appropriate names, preferably including TCRE in it - eg TCREsoundclash01.mp3 - because this both makes it easier for us when managing the 'my media' page, and also means that our listeners have a better idea of what an mp3 contains if it's floating around on their pooter

*please also remember to fill out the ID3 tags of your mp3, with at the very least a track name (eg TCRE SoundClash #1) and artist name (Hiccup vs Bristle-KRS); podomatic automatically adds the podcast page, podmail & feed info to the 'comments' field.

*when uploading to the blog please try to remember to also add links to the various podcast & website pages to the 'comments' field:

http://coolestradio.podomatic.com/
http://www.thecoolestthingever.co.uk/
http://coolestradio.com/
plus your own podcast page url

===

now we have the 'proper' site, maybe we need to think about what we're doing with the podomatic page? it's our best advertised collective page, but i don't see much point in straight duplicating the proper site... i think keeping a selection of shows on it, plus any 'best of' shows (*looks at josh*), and whtever the most recent show is should suffice. i think we're knocking out too many new shows for the original idea of 1 in, 1 out to really work.

thoughts?

I think those are some pretty darn sensible suggestions.

I noticed that thecoolestthingever.co.uk now redirects to the blog, but there's no obvious link on the blog back to the boards. Might be nice if there was.
