|
|
i'll try and collect together all the useful stuff here.
first up:
film reviews
to keep things tidy, please try and keep to this basic format.
1. create a wiki page for the whole film, rather than just your review of it
2. then you can insert your review in the 'tcte reviews' section, and anyone else can add there review in the same section, and it will all be together and neat and tidy!
3. please remember to use the 'spoiler' template before describing anything other than the briefest details about the film.
4. when you link to the original review on tcte, please link to the POST not just the THREAD - the link you need is accessed by clicking the little white sheet of paper icon to the top left of the post - 'copy link location' or equivalent will grab it for you
suggested format code:
| Code: | == Overview ==
FILMTITLE is a YEAR film about BRIEFDESCRIPTION.
Kast & kru
* Directed by INSERT DIRECTOR
* Written by INSERT WRITER(S)
* Produced by INSERT PRODUCER/STUDIO
* Featuring INSERT MAIN ACTORS
Plot
TCTE reviews
Reviews originally published by TCTE posters on TheCoolestThingEver forums.
REVIEWER 1'S NAME 's review
REVIEW GOES HERE
Review originally TCTE THREAD #POST URL HERE.

Linkies
* LINK TO IMDB PAGE
* LINK TO WIKIPEDIA PAGE
* LINK TO OFFICIAL SITE
* LINK TO FANSITE

|
obviously all the CAPITALISED BITS are the bits that need to be written by you
please make sure you italicise film names to make them stand out - that's two apostrophes before and after the film's name:
the 'Category:TCTE film reviews' bit at the end means all pages with film reviews are automatically collected together onto one page and handily alphabetically sorted.
sorted

how to create an entry
1. check there's not already a page for it - type the name (spell it correctly!) in the search box, click 'go' (or 'search' to see if the term crops up anywhere else, in case there's a differently-titled page on essentially the same thing you want to write about)
2. if there's nothing there yet, it'll return a page that says:
| Quote: | Search results
From CoolestWikiEver
You searched for xxxxxxx
There is no page titled "xxxxxxx". You can create this page. |
3. in which case, click the 'you can create this page' link, and hey presto!
4. now you come to the main 'editing' page. along the top there you have a bunch of basic editing tools, that do the following:
bold | italic | internal hyperlink | external hyperlink | level 2 headline | embedded image | media file link | mathematical formula | ignore wiki formatting | your signature & timestamp | horizontal rule
all pretty simple, really.
but the points to rembember are that these just generate wikicode - much like bb code on forums, or html, they just tag shit around words to format it in a certain way, and it's quicker to remember what they are than to keep going up to the top and clicking buttons.
the ones you'll use the most are:
bolding
| Code: | | THREE APOSTROPHES EITHER SIDE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO BOLD |
italicising
| Code: | | TWO APOSTROPHES EITHER SIDE OF WHAT YOU WANT TO BOLD |
internal hyperlinks (to another page within coolestwiki, whether it's been written yet or not: blue underlined links are active, written pages; red underlined ones are unwritten ones)
| Code: | | TWO SQUARE BRACKETS around the word/phrase of the wiki article you want to link to - in this case linking to a page called 'TWO SQUARE BRACKETS' |
external hyperlinks (to websites outside of wiki)
| Code: | | NAME puts in a link to www.webaddress.com and calls the link 'NAME' |
there you are! that's the basics. |

wiki formatting
when you create a page, it automatically puts the page title in what it calls 'level 1' headline.
this is bolded, and bigger than everything else.
everything else under the title is ordered by, in the first instance, 'level 2' headlines.
if, within a level 2 section you need to sub-divide it, you bring in 'level 3' headings, then 'level 4'.
each 'level' of heading is bolded, but smaller than the last.
to create different levels of headings, simply put type out the corresponding number of equals signs either side of the title of the heading
eg
level 2 heading for a section called 'Ninjaboy had his knockers'
| Code: | | == Ninjaboy had his knockers == |
level 3 headings for sub-sections of ninjaboy's knockers might look like this:
| Code: | === His family ===
His friends
=== Everyone who ever met him === |
if we then wanted to add details to each or just one of any of those sub-sections (say, listing categories of 'everyone who ever met him'), we would go to level 4:
| Code: | ==== Geordies ====
Girls
Koreans
==== Rival interweb bosses ==== |
got it? |

bullet points
bullet points help make lists look neater.
for simple, unordered, bulletpointed lists, just stick an asterisk and a space before each line:
| Code: | * first thing
* second thing
* third thing
* and on
* and on
* and fucking on |
for a numbered list, use the hash instead of the asterisk, and the numbers will automatically be generated:
| Code: | # first thing
# second thing
# third thing
# and on
# and on
# and fucking on |
sequential numbering will only work when there is no break in the list
eg
| Code: | # first thing
# second thing
# third thing
# and on |
will give
[quote]1 first thing
1 second thing
2 third thing
1 and on[/code]
simple, eh?
oh, and be warned - unless you bullet point your links in any links section, whether it's hash or asterisk, wiki will automatically run them together.
so always bulletpoint your lists of links - besides, it's tidier |

categories
'categories' mean we can collect together links to pages which are similar on a single page.
for instance, there is a category page for podcasts, which collects together links to lots of different pages relating to podcasts.
this is done by notionally creating a page called
| Code: | | |
which you do simply by putting that code into the end of the text for a page about podcasts, and then another, and then another. red underlined category pages are ones which don't have any descriptive text specifically written for that category, but they still work as a collection of links.
anyhow, to create a 'category', all you have to do is start with two square brackets
write 'category' and put a colon on it
then stick the name of what you want to call that category, and close it off with two more square brackets
put it all together and you have:
| Code: | | |
which allows us, very conveniently, to collect together in one handy list all the individual knob gag pages we find, simply by editing into their text.
genius.
categories already in use include:

templates
templates are bits of pages which we can insert across several other pages, yet retain control of its text. templates can be for pretty much anything and look like anything - some, like the disambiguation and spoiler ones i've protected, so only sysops can edit them, but all the others are editable.
in other words, if we want to stick in the same bit of text in twenty different wiki pages, but were fretting because that text was likely to need updating quite regularly - meaning we'd have to edit 20 pages at a time to keep it all up to date - then we use a template.
templates can be edited just as easily as any other page, it's just they are, well, different.
i've used templates to bring together a lot of information about tcre podcast network - whilst there's a wiki page called 'TCRE Podcast Network', which explains all about CoolestRadio, i've also created a template called, uh, you guessed it, 'Template:TCRE Podcast Network'. i've then dropped this into the pages of each podcaster, each podcast, and each show, allowing more interconnectability but with minimal effort required, because any updating only needs to be done on one page - the template page.
more ambitiously, i have also created 'Template:WoBcast', which reinforces the main 'WoBcast' wiki page by detailing the people involved and the shows they've casted. this means that instead of creating one really big page for wobcast, and then adding copious amounts of detail as they produce new shows, there is one general purpose wobcast page, then a page for each of their actual shows - and all of them navigable through the template.
to create a template, you just go through the same sort of naming convention as outlined for categories above:
would be what you might call a template about dave.
but unlike with categories, you actually have to create a template.
so type 'Template:NAME' into the search box on the left, click 'go', then 'create this page' and you're away.
but hang on! first you better check there's not one already existing doing the same thing. check the special pages > all pages > [sort by namespace] templates page for a list of existing templates.
so, we've checked - there's nothing there doing what we want to do, so we create a new template by typing
| Code: | | Template:THE NAME OF OUR NEW TEMPLATE |
into the go/search box, clicking 'go' and then 'create this page'.
then we get through to the normal edit page, where you can use the standard wiki code as well as other technical shizzle.
i find it's easiest just to borrow the code off a similar template on wikipedia, and then adapt it.
don't forget to change any references to 'Wikipedia' to 'CoolestWiki' if you crib code.
then once you've created (and saved!) your template, you can insert it on any page you wish to - and unlike with categories, which are automatically displayed at the bottom, you can actually stick a template anywhere you want.
to display the template, you want to envelop your Template:NAME in two pairs of them sexy archery brackets:
some templates you may well want to take note of:

- for warning readers about stuff that's coming up that might spill the beans on plot points in films, books, etc
- to stick at the end of a passage with spoilers
- links to all WoBcast people and episode pages
- ditto my AOF podcasts
- ditto my BBS podcasts
- ditto my UC podcasts
finally, you can also set up redirects to your functioning template, if it's hard to spell or long etc.
to redirect:
so if our template was actually called
| Code: | | Template:DAVEASAURUSVERYLARGENAME |
we could, if we could be arsed, create an empty template called
and then redirect it with the text
| Code: | | #REDIRECT DAVEASAURUSVERYLARGENAME |
got that?
oh, here's some useful links:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Template (this links to various useful templates)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Template (a fairly in-depth introduction to templates)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Advanced_templates (even geekier shit)
easy peasy \ /

redirects
redirects automatically redirect you to one page from another.
funny that...
so...
if you go to the page called 'Kid Hideous', it automatically redirects to 'Ninjaboy'
if you go to the page called 'Tcre podcast network', it automatically redirects to 'TCRE Podcast Network'.
this is useful because:
1. wiki automatically capitalises the first letter, whether it's meant to be upper or lower case, but it's case sensitive for everything following - so unless someone searching for a page correctly capitalises where appropriate, they might not get to the page they want (see TCRE Podcast Network above)
2. you can create redirects from dead pages which have incorrectly spelled/punctuated titles to the real page
3. you can channel searches for multiple identitied subjects/people through to one or a small number of pages, rather than creating proper pages for each individual one (eg Kid Hideous/Ninjadmin/Treefarmer/Ninjaboy/War Kriminals etc)
to do a redirect, create a page and just add:
where NAME is the exact name of the wiki page you want to redirect to (and save!)
eg
redirects to the page called DAVE and nothing else
redirects to the page called DaVe and nothing else
| Code: | | #REDIRECT Knob gags |
redirects to the page called Knob gags and nothing else
| Code: | | #REDIRECT KnobGags |
redirects to the page called KnobGags and nothing else
and so on and so on |
