ok the manga i have watched recently have been
Spriggan:
where a scientific experiment goes horribly wrong and a mad scientist tries to destroy the earth with a timebomb that japanese scientists found buried in the ground, A special gentically odified commando (a spriggan) has to take him out
It was pretty good, the drawings were old fashioned, but modern at the same time, same with the animation, it was all done in the cartoony style but it was very slick, i enjoyed it, although it was really daft
Ghost in the Shell 2:
In the same vein as the first GITS, quite hard to tell you what goes on without revealing the plot. the crux of it is that a new type of androids are being introduced into the underworld which are deadly killers
to be honest i didn't follow the plot at all, i've seen it 3 times and it's so all over the place you lose track of what's going on, but the world that they have created is beautiful, there are about 5 sequences which are just breathtaking, i might watch it in a second actually |

to really understand ghost in the shell 2 you need to have read the manga
as with the first movie it takes elements from the manga but then alters them quite dramatically
a lot of ghost in the shell 2 i belive was based on the "robot rondo" story from the manga but the main concept of the movie focuses elsewhere
in the first movie there was large elements about ghost hacking and what makes the self the self
in the second movie the fcus movs from the act of hacking to the experiance of being hacked and from how we understand the self to how do we determin what reality is
thus many section of the second movie rely on the diffrence between the real and unreal and multiple perspectives on the same scene... often highlighted by the use of diffrent animation techniques |

the actuall things that are happening arn't really what matter
what matters is how batou percives his enviroment... first you have the reality of the fight with the gynoid ... with the bodies of the dead showing reality yet the gynoid herself is quite unreal..
then you have thinitial slip between reality and unreality .... the fight in the store which was a hack
you have the festival which although real is all about gods and unreal worlds
then you have the compltly unreal situation of the dolls house.. although there are elements of reality injected injto it... mainly the major and the dog |

i think you also need to read the manga to understand the origin
it feels compleatly diffrent to the anime though
much closer to the tv series
the tv series are also really good to get more of a feeling to whats going on |

you mean stand alone complex? the ones about the tanks?
i saw a few of them, didn't really get into them tho
i think because most of the anime i like, the story is just more excuses for violence, when something like GITS is on with so many layers, I'm not expecting it |
