web browser
use firefox! you can get loads of handy extensions & add-ons to help refine your websurfing - search boxes, tabbed browsing, all kinds of useful utilities

downloadthemall! (download manager)
use downloadthemall! with firefox, and collect together files for download off of webpages more easily than manually right-clicking a load of links... like, if you're on a page with lots of links to mp3s, instead of individually clicking each link, just right-click and select 'downloadthemall!', and voila! it automatically downloads everything on the page!

you can refine your downloading as well, say, to only download mp3s or jpegs or whatnot.

search engine add-ons
add loads more search engines to your firefox search box from the extensive archive of engines at mozdev - torrents, dictionaries, shop sites and much more...

Firefox is good. So is Opera. It has a lot of Firefox extention features already built in (esp. mouse gestures), plus it has a pretty good mail client and news reader built in. Not that I use them.

mouse gestures is probably my most favouritest firefox add on, so much so that when i go on another pc, it pisses me off not having them and always do the movements by accident

I always end up trying to use them in other programs, which is annoying.

Actually, I once found a program that let you set mouse gestures that would work on pretty much any program on a PC, but it was a bit fiddly to configure, so I gave up on it in the end.

audio recording software
wiretap pro allows you to record any audio on your computer - whatever the application you're running. so you can record off video clips, dvd's, realplayer, etc etc.

it's supposedly paid-for, but you get to try-before-you-buy. not noticed any irritating static after 10 minutes like with audiohijack yet...

(think it's mac-only, sorry)

audacity records any sounds that computers make... (or at least has the ability to).

Thats how I got samples from random films and stuff on my radio show. Play the film in windows media player, then press record in audacity. Simple!

must be down to preferences - the way i've got it set up, when i start recording in audacity it automatically mutes any other sound output other than line in or mic.

audio hijack and wiretap are apps that can run in the background - a lot more convenient. on the unregistered versions they save to .aiff, which can later be edited or converted; the pro versions can save to .mp3/.aac etc.

there's a drop down menu where you can select how you want the sound recorded,

change it to wave and it records any sound output from your computer. good for samples etc

I think it depends on your soundcard too. In that dropdown menu, I get a "What You Hear" option, which records whatever is going on. You can then save as pretty much any format you like.

nah, i don't get that at all - just a 'default' sound source on the dropdown menu and nothing else.

but like i say, i think the way i've got things set up is better anyway - audacity is primarily an audio editor, and i think she prefers to have your full concentration when you're recording with her, rather than running in the background for the odd bit here and there
