It's sadder that they contributed to the loss of true small independent record shops from our high streets by selling stuff at uneconomic prices.

Derian, Cassette Boy is renouned for tracks like that. There's even another filthy Harry Potter one later on the same album (Dead Horse).

I would never have discovered Jim O'Rourke if it wasn't for Imperial Music on Park Street here in Bris. Nor would my Stereolab collection be as numerous. Their prices were reasonable, they stocked loads of good vinyl and catered for an eclectic taste. Yet within a few months of Fopp opening it was gone.

If the quality is good I'm prepared to pay a fair price.

When have you ever seen a breakcore 12" in a Fopp store? They rarely had any decent vinyl.

I'm not sorry to see Fopp go. I buy almost all my tunes from DSWAT or online, anyway.
I just wish they'd never existed.
That way one of the best record stores ever might still exist.

i think mp3s are killing the independent record shops as well

i used to always buy vinyl, but the ones in newcastle just can't compete with the internet, they are gonna be 3 weeks behind the internet no matter how switched on they are

mind you, i don't have access to decks anymore which affects it too

At the time when Imperial was going under the owner admitted that the internet sales was affecting his business, but he could cope with it until Fopp appeared.
There's no saying what would have happened without Fopp, especially as internet sales are on the increase, however, if we come back to my listening tastes, there is a whole range of things that are not necessarily available digitally. And I prefer vinyl anyway.

Strangely, if it wasn't for podcasts, instead of broadening our listening tastes people's choice of music would probably actually become more limited.
Isn't that what iTunes et al want after all?
Or am I just a terminal cynic?

i agree, i'm guilty of narrowing my musical tastes just because it's so easy to get stuff you know you'll like off soulseek, i'm forever rediscovering bands from the old days rather than hunting down new stuff

i spose i do on soundclick, but it's usually jungle

i'm also pretty guilty of listening to myself more than anyone else
