One aspect of creating twelve-tone music is the combinatory theory, whereby each hexachord of the twelve-tone row is combined simultaneously, thus ensuring that the piece is atonal. This can extent to various permutations of the row, i.e. in different transpositions and retrograde and inversion (and the inversion of the retrograde).
This can also be used in smaller cells (i.e. tri- and tetrachords).
One interesting thing Elliot Carter introduced was, was that, once all the twelve tones has been introduced in a piece, various segments (all the various aforementioned -chords) can essentially be used as artificial modes. |
