am reading 100 years of solitude by gabriel garcia martinez
it's about a tribe that makes this new village in the middle of the jungle and how the village grows from scratch into a big town under the guidance of one family
it;s pretty interesting but one of those books you read relly slowly |

Elmore Leonard - Tishomingo Blues
About a bloke what does high diving for a living and gets caught up with the dixie mafia and civil war reenactments and shooting people and drugs n' shizzle. Not classic Leonard, but enjoyable enough read. The diving thing seemed a bit of a stretch though. Like he needed a new USP for a main character, so chose diving. The fact he's a diver is incidental rather than crucial to the plot.
Elmore Leonard - Mr Paradise
More traditional and more satisfying fare from EL. Rich old man pays girls to dress up as cheer leaders and dance for him. One of them and the old man get whacked. But who's telling the truth? Nicely paced and structured, in the Columbo mould (i.e. you know who did it, but it's up to the clever cop to prove it). Likeable, believable characters. No pointless high diving. |

100 yrs of Solitude is good, even if it did inspire a Levellers song of the same name.
I'm reading 'Adventures in Capitalism' a collection of short stories by Toby Litt, which is quite good and 'The invisible Persuaders' which is about PR and how it works which is also quite good cos it's another book that makes me think there is no point watching/readng the news. I am also reading 'Blow-up' - a collection of Julio Cortazar short stories which a bit kafka-esque and oddly funny/unsettling. |

yeah, it was nice enough that one, but the diving thing did seem a bit... extraneous. 'I'm gonna dive from five-hundred feet into a puddle, me. easy.'
If you like Leonard, you'll probably enjoy his collection of cowboy short stories, if you haven't already read them. Written in the 50's, they are really... er... good.
Joe R. Lansdale- you read him at all? oh, and Robert Ferrigno. he's ace. |

I'm reading The God Delusion, as I believe it is obligatory to do so.
and a trashy detective novel set in Oslo called The Devil's Star which is a bit shit but I want to know the ending now so I'll finish it.
I'm gonna read The Blue Bear next. |
