|
|
Ok, here is how i make mine
Equipment
PC :mine is not high spec by any means, obviously it helps if you got a decent sondcard etc, but it's not essential
Mic: Again, any mike will do, i have the worst mic in the world, preffferably a studio mic, but we are not professional, we arent singing or owt....
Software
I use Sonic Foundry Acid. You can get a free limited trial on their website whichis just about enough. Obviously it's better to get the full one. PM me and i'll explain how you buy it
With Acid you can just drag and drop your mp3s onto your 'show' and then record yourself speaking afterwards (or not....) and then render it to an mp3 for uploading. The sfacid website has tutorials on how to use Acid, but it's very intuitive. To make them into mp3, go to file and click on 'render as', choose mp3, name your file, and away ya go!
You may want to try the free, cross-platform (ie Windows/Mac OS/Linux) audio recorder & editor Audacity. There is a thread explaining the basics of using Audacity if you are unsure about how it all works.
Copyright
Using copyrighted material for internet radio is illegal. I stick to unsigned acts, there are loads of links on the useful stuff forum for underground musicians who wouldn't mind having their music played.
MySpace has a shitload as well.
Other social networking sites, such as Multiply and Bebo, and music hosting sites like Soundclick and MusicBuilder, are also good places to hunt down music.
Some bulletin boards - like GYBO, which focuses on bootlegs, mashups and remixes - are also worth checking through for links to music makers.
It's polite to email the artists first but you already knew that....
Uploading
There are various sites offering free hosting for large files, but these mostly come with conditions - files may only be hosted for a short period of time, or for a finite period of time. See below for some of the sites that offer this - but do please check the limitations, and let people know when you post up a show!
More recently we've come across a free podcast hosting service, called podOmatic, and that seems to be the easiest and most hassle-free way of doing it. If you are not sure what 'podcasting' is, then check the handy guide and links on the thread called podcast selectahs.
Odeo offers a similar free service, but a 3 second Odeo ident is added to the beginning of every file you host with them.
Free file hosting
http://www.megaupload.com/
http://www.yousendit.com/
http://www.sendthisfile.com/
http://ezshare.de/
http://www.zshare.net/
**See free (or cheap) hosting, file transfer and online storage thread for more details and other services available**
A few last tips
*Try to make your files around 60mb/hour so that people can download them more quickly
*Avoid rendering your files at anything above 128kbps*Don't forget to post up your links when your shows are done!
This is a very basic guide, if people wanna add stuff or ask questions, just post it here....

on the file storage front, yousendit offers a similar service to megaupload, though with limitations (if you register into the 'yousendit lite' free service, you get 100 downloads per file, for up to 7 days, with file sizes of up to 1gb).
rapidshare offers free unlimited uploads and downloads for file sizes of up to 100mb.
meanwhile, you can get a free podcast page from podomatic, which provides for 500mb of storage and 15gb monthly downloads... i've got one now and if it works, i'm going to load all my radio shows to that, because you can get a proper rss feed which means your listeners' pooters will detect when you have a new show up and automatically download it... |

Cool, some instructions
I'm gonna go pick up my computer later this week and then you'll be bombarded by beats!
I'm thinking I might do a whole bunch of shorter shows, say 20 minutes each. That way they're easier to play on my mp3 player phone (cos it doesn't have a fast forward button)
Mine will be choc full of copyrighted material, but it's all at least 10 years old and was only released on vinyl so I doubt anyone will give a fuck. It's also all featured on numerous dj mix tapes from the early 90s.
Any requests? |

top tips on podcasting from the master - tim baker from 'radio clash':
| Quote: | Now I see a lot of new podcasts out there, starting out and facing the same sort of issues I did and falling down the same holes. Now at the danger of sounding like a condescending kitten, there are a few pointers that Uncle Tim has that I've learned - maybe you'll find these useful.
1. Feed: A podcast needs a feed, some files and a decent-ish server. Libsyn or Feedburner can sort these out for you, or use a blog like Wordpress or Blogger Pro that can automatically generate your feed (has to be RSS 2 - google/wiki it for more details, it's techy/geeky)
2. iTunes - unless like me you hate iTunes cos the toughlove you've got from them, you'll need a iTunes-friendly feed, so either use a service that'll add those bits for you or use a plugin like iPodCatter for Wordpress. Interestingly Podshow+ and Odeo use some of the same features....so it's worth adding, although not essential.
3. ID3 tags! ID3 TAGS! again ID3 TAGS! Bane of my life as a DJ is also a bane for podcasting - make sure all fields are filled out and consistently because they are essential for devices like iPods who organise tunes by Album, Genre or Song/Artist - if your podcast is called Track 05 or Show 3 how can your listener find it?
4. Make sure your filenames are short and sweet, maybe identified by a number or date or something memorable, and repeat that info in the title, and maybe announce this identifier at the start of the show - this makes it easy to identify shows.
Also remember older iPods only showed around 11 characters in lists, so if you got BIG ELEPHANT SHOW 11 all you would see is BIG ELEPHAN... so you might want to keep a small or shortened name in the title ID3 tag - I say Radio Clash XX: Name cos I know it'll fit (might have to change this when I go three figures!). Modern iPods do scroll the name though, but not all MP3 devices work like that, many the file systems are more like DOS and tend to not show the full description until you click on the file - hence a good filename is also needed.
5. Volume and compression - look into raising the volume of your audio as some shows are SO quiet it's difficult to hear them...there are good free compression plugins, I can't really go into technical details here, but Hard Limiter, Ultramaximizer or Normalize / Compressor plugins (at a 2:1 or 5:1 ratio, or more depending on whether it's music or speech) are your friend!
6. Encoding rates and file formats - when you encode to MP3 you have yer bitrate (kind of like how much space it will take/quality - lower is smaller yet lower quality) and sample rate. Sample rate should always be 44.1khz, 22khz or 11Khz as Flash players on sites like Podshow+, Podcast Pickle etc. can't play other rates or speed it up/slow it down.
Think about using mono for lower rates if you can, it sounds better.
If you want to use AAC or another format please think about your audience - although those formats have nice bells and whistles and sound better, you're shutting out a big audience by using them. MP3 is safest unless you 100% know most or all of your audience are listening via that format...maybe offer both?
7. Album art - it's fun and easy to add via iTunes or AudioTagger or other MP3 tagging tools...also you can add comments in the comments field but also the Lyrics field - this is visible on modern iPods, so people can see your shownotes on the IPod. Obviously other devices vary...and it looks like only the first album photo is visible on a 5G iPod like Charles...but iTunes you can scroll through more
8. Good microphones / headphones...really if you edit audio the latter is essential, you'd be surprised how much difference a decent pair of headphones or monitoring speakers makes to your audio production. Good microphones and mixers are detailed elsewhere but you don't have to pay more than 50 quid for a good dynamic mic and 30-40 for a small mixer - and it sounds so much better. USB microphones are another option, never tried them, and then it goes crazy after that price and option wise.
9. Noise when interviewing - a real nightmare, but always realise that music and motor noise *blush* is always louder than you think - avoid it if possible. Very directional mics are available, condenser and gun mics, I use a cheap video one, but again that's an area where you can pay silly money. Best to arrange a quiet area and use a cheaper mic, unless you can afford the pro outboard recording gear, minimixer or pro condenser mic...sadly it seems like pro mics tend to work best or at all with other expensive pro gear, so it's not just the cost of one.
Noise reduction is usually a last resort, you can do a lot with EQ, clip restoration/lowering of volume and a notch filter. Noise Reduction is quite complicated and really it's best to record the audio as cleanly as possible first, because you tend to get an odd whispering or echo effect unless used very subtly (and then you get the noise!)
10. Record externally - consider recording your show on a small device or MD, as recording straight into a computer that's also playing audio or doing other things is risky - one crash and you can lose the lot. I record into a cheap iRiver iFP recorder...not the most 'pro' but I know even if I take the batteries out during recording I'll still have the recording up to that point.
11. Have a good idea for a show - seems obvious, but the more prepared you are the less you stammer/stutter or um and err. I'm bad for not doing this but I do pre-plan most shows, the ones I don't tend to be editing nightmares. Podcasting is about niche audiences, so it's not necessarily about 100,000s of listeners but talking very deeply and intensely to a few listeners. Generally I find it's a good idea either to be part of that niche or know a lot about it...a fan of whatever your show is about.
12. Promote your show - not just on places like iTunes and PodcastAlley, but the old-fashioned ways such as blogging, mentioning it to friends, sending out press releases (I'm crap at that), even as Jeb over at £50 Pound Note did badges and cards, or even t-shirts like Keith and the Girl...other places such as Myspace - wherever your audience hangs out, really.
13. Playing software - there's loads of software now that does all the podcasting playing, recording and jingle creation, but when I started it didn't exist, so I use DJ MP3 software - it autocues (ie you load a track it goes to the start) and auto-stops (when it stops playing it doesn't repeat) which really helps. So maybe use software that does that, it'll help with false-cueing of songs or false starts. I still do them though cos I'm stupid :-D
That's it for the moment, there's about 1,000 other things I could mention and will when I think of them and have more time. I hope this helps. |

podomatic peeps:
make sure you name your show properly, so it comes up in itunes or whatnot with a meaningful name... if you just leave the default settings as they are, it will show up as "'s podcast".
to change it, go to the 'manage your podcast' page at http://www.podomatic.com/podcast
then click 'edit tagline & description' (towards the top of the page, to the left, just below the 'podcasting tip' banner), and enter whatever name you want to give your show - and add a description about your show too! |

some observations on getting people to listen to your show
* tracklistings: if you put up tracklistings, it's easier for complete randoms looking for a track to come by your show via google or another search engine if you've played that track *and actually written it down in your show notes*!!! a lot of the referrals we get on the tcre podcast page (and on my own, bristle's bunkrs sessions) come through search engines
* tags: when you upload to podOmatic, there's a field for 'tags'. *don't* neglect it! when i reupload other people's shows to tcre i tend to fill this in from a stock tag text:
| Quote: | | tcre, thecoolestthingever, thecoolesthingever, coolestradio, hiccup, ninjaboy, strung out, misskitty, miss kitty, moxie, bristle, krs, bristle-krs, bunkrs, kid hideous, hideous radio, myspace, music, bristol, bristol music, jungle, bootlegs, mashups, breakcore, josh, radio josh, most literal man in music, covers, cover versions, undercover, serpico |
but when i tag my own shows on bristle's bunkrs sessions i tend to add the names of the artists featured that episode too, and song names if i really can be arsed.
* blog it! when you've done a show, blog about it so as many people as possible know it's out. again, post up tracklistings, and tag if possible. make sure it's mentioned on places like myspace, bebo, multiply, communities etc, as well as on blogger, wordpress, livejournal and other blog-specific places.
* comment about it! if you post comments to other people's sites or blogs, mention your podcast! and link to it!
* let artists you've played know about it! though this is mostly for those artists where copyright/royalties & shizzle won't be an issue
* link! make sure you link to your podcast everywhere you go, and swap links with others!
* signatures! if you are on bulletin boards where sigs are enabled, make use of the facility!
* invite & respond to feedback! if you have regular listeners, ask them what they like and what they don't like about your show... if you feel they're offering constructive criticism, act on it! and mention people's names, we all love shout outs! |
