yes i read pac-man sometimes, and crispy called us frivolous

but he does have a point, this whole thing with not being serious has kind of turned into a bit of a thing

i like serious posts, and i like giving my opinion about things my problem is with people acting like fucking kids like they do on pac-man, MATB and TI by playing the man and not the ball

i want this website to be a place where people can talk about anything, I love political shit, maybe i will reply by being sarky, same with philosophy and history, i love it, so i urge people to post stuff out of the news that interests them, or stuff about their job etc

i want this board to be a place you can say anything, moan about your day, make serious posts, the thing i want this board not to do is to become wrapped up in itself like pac-man, MATB and TI are, man not the ball i will enforce to the end, that is when internet board become shite is when you try to make a point and you get shouted down cos of som spurrilous reason

but i don't want poeple to feel they can't post on here cos it is not frivolous enough or whatever

man not the ball is the only principle i respect, and one that noone yet has managed to make a reality

personal insults are a no go, but the idea that people feel that they can't say sopmething because of my policy i find a bit shite

no offence dude, but hearing you lecture people on "people acting like fucking kids ...by playing the man and not the ball" is taking the piss :P

i don't care if other people wanna talk serious, i've retired though

i'm here for the fucking about, the arts chatter & the tech shizzle

ps i don't care if some bloke in some other corner of the cyberweb called us 'frivolous'. we run tingsz we got podcasts, wikis, blogs & boards.

fuck all them other chat-chat radicals, pontificating yuppies and violence-obsessed midlifecrisisers, we may be frivolous, we may not be - but we fucking put the strokes in!

i agree

i am just worried about making the site less interesting cos people feel that they can't post about something interesting cos we define ourselves as apolitical, cos we arent', we are proper anarchists cos the 'boss' is prepared to give power to anyone who really gives a fuck about using their power for good

i just don't like the idea that people feel that they can't post about summat cos they feel that it is 'too political' or whatever, all i want is a space where people can be themselves whoever that may be, and cos it's so cheap i am prepared to bankroll it for years and years as long as it keeps getting better like it does

and i know that i am a fine one to talk about being horrible to people etc, i think i got to an extreme with the internet character thing that noone should ever reach with what i said tbh. good thing about having my own board is that i can delete everything

as i pointed out what, 2 years ago? urban relied on a core posting community at the time of around 2-300 people, out of a total paper population of 20,000. a 'community' of voyeurs.

here we have a much, much smaller total membership, but proportionally more active posters. this to me is a good thing

on a personal note, i feel safer here than elsewhere. more trust. less bullshit.

pps that's one of the worst 'definitions' of anarchist principles i've ever seen, but as i'm retired, that's all the anal-ysis you're getting

ppps i'm off to delete some postless voyeur accounts, just because i can

i do think this site is a genuine achievement, not by me but one which i feel proud of initiating, because we only have about 20 regulars, but they all love it, and the regulars i do geuinely trust

i just want to keep improving the place tbh, i do get the feeling that people want to post about some stuff but they don't because it's meant to be about dinosaurs and shit

i just think the only thing that should be a rule is that noone should insult each other, other that that i am just glad that people come on here

What's good about here is it isn't filled with threads full of pointless (((hugs))) and people taling about what is the best place to have a poo in brickstone. Also, stuff gets done and actually, though I do use urban from time to time I find a lot of what passes for 'discussion' is rendered intelligable by bollocks personal fights and some spectacularly anal retentiveness (look at post 63 on thread 14.1.2.67 type rubbish.) Also, unlike urban, I don't think there is a hierarchy really on here - On urban, you could guarentee if certain people post a thread, it will get 100s of replies whereas if other people do, it will get about 10, same thread, different poster. It's just the nature of Urban, it's about mostly some people who go to the pub in London together, but it kind of takes a while to realise that.

So, in short - this board might have its quota of frivolity it also is better in just about every respect and I like frivolity too. I think about just about the only thing I wouldn't post on here is a thread about my personal problems, I would happily post about art, music, politics, food whatever I would on urban - in fact more happily.

So thus, TCTE wins...

In fact I agree with the no insulting rule - I sometimes think 'oh, I'll go and read urban' and within a page or two come across some 'Fuck you, you SWP cunt, you are a pathetic retard who should have been aborted with a red hot spoon and fed to the pidgeon who should then have been drowned in acid, you ugly balding fat cuntface' and normally it's the people who post insults like that who whinge on about threads like 'Ghost or post - Which is best' and to be honest, I prefer a nice whimsical poll to some kind of sub-Blackadder with tourettes outbursts competition which this place is mercifully free from.

You cunts.

You let this place run for 5 years and I bet you a hierarchy will arise just the same - it's monkey dynamics, innit.

I think the main difference is though, we don't know each other in real life very much. I've never met ninj, simian or Dr Carnage or a lot of teh posters, met Bristle for about 3 hrs once, met derian twice or three times, met hiccup for an hour, met rednblack the same - I don't think that's the same as a lot of the core posters on Urban - thus if hierarchies arise, then it's not for the same reasons.

It's urban's strength in many ways, but also its downfall in some. I don't mean to be hyper critical, I like a lot of people on urban and it's ok but like bristle says above, this board feels different and I prefer it.

wouldn't say that this is still the honeymoon period for this place, we are a year and a half old now, and we've had a couple of problems, but the reason we don't have the whole cliqueiness problem that urban has is a deliberate policy rather than everyone being excited cos it's new. Like TTG had that for the first few months and then the cracks started to appear and it fell to bits after 6 months......

i do agree that if this place got much bigger the dynamics would change a lot, people would start feeling like they were being ignored, someone would decide that someone else was ruining their enjoyment etc, maybe it's already happened

and by the way, i'll make the statement again, that if in 5 years, this place has hundreds of posters everyday and every time i log on i have an inbox full of reported posts and admin tasks, i will find a way to cash in on it, don't wanna make millions off it, and all the mods will get their fair share, but if it becomes work for me then i'm gonna wanna get paid....

The best kind of "serious" discussions for me (about politics or anything else) are ones where you can't guess what people are going to say -- where you can see the thought process behind the post.

This is why I don't really get involved in the politics side of libcom or MATB, because -- as much as I agree with some of the stuff on there -- it's so fucking predictable. You see a thread title, you see the name of the last poster, and (with a few exceptions) you know pretty much what's going to be there before you read it.

This board has the potential to have real, serious, and interesting political discussion because

1. There's not many of us, so there's time to read & reflect
2. We don't get into the slanging side of the operation
3. No-one's really pushing a "party line."

This said, I don't think you can force it. Over the Bank Holiday weekend, some joke thread of mine (I think it was a poll) turned into a semi-serious political discussion, for instance.

yeah i quite like it how discussions just kind of wander around like conversations do rather than being in all seperate threads

i wouldn't like it at all if the board was full of threads about labour policy and shit, but i do like having a little chat about shizzle from time to time.....

Definitely. You guys are still inside the monkeysphere - everybody's equal cos everyone's got capacity to hold a relationship with everybody else. when you have so many people that you have to start discriminating who you talkto, because you can't hold everyone in your mind at once, then cliques and groups start to form. Tribal monkeys. Ook.

That's the key. One of the dismal things about pac-man and TTG are/were people running about telling others what to post. On pac-man you get bullied and abused should you mention dreadlocks or diss a deejay or criticise white middle class Brixton drugs culture. On TTG there was the famous instance when Butchersapron arrived back from his hols and got narky because people weren't posting 'robust debate' but were having fun instead, the rotters! MATB is a control freak's nightmare. It's like walking on eggshells. I see TCTE and TI as having got over that central problem. Just let people do what they want within a minimal set of posting rules. Tell the control freaks to f*** off. Anything worth having will grow naturally from that.
